Each UU congregation is an independently-governed community. As such, we have committed to the following covenant to guide our interactions.

Congregational Covenant

Adopted by First Universalist Society in Franklin on 1/29/2017

As I enter this sacred space, I will do my part to create a loving, welcoming environment.  I promise to respect and nurture others in their spiritual journeys.  I will speak with directness and empathy, especially in times of disagreement.  I will strive to understand other points of view with a focus on the goal of building the beloved community within these walls and in the wider world.

Understanding that we will have different opinions as we work together, the members of First Universalist Society in Franklin will:

  • Commit to working with one another with respect and appreciation of our differing gifts
  • Keep the lines of communication open between us by speaking our own truth, speaking directly to one another about our concerns and listening thoughtfully
  • Clearly and kindly strive to give one another constructive feedback and strive to receive it without defensiveness
  • Recognize the necessity of compromise and work for “Both/And” responses- *when both approaches combined are better than either one alone
  • Be clear and thoughtful as well as respectful of others when writing and emailing
  • Refrain from sending letters or emails that are emotionally reactive
  • Be sensitive in our use of language to honor one another as spiritual beings in the process of decision making
  • Exhibit behaviors that enhance the dignity and inherent worth of all participants
  • Express sincere appreciation, speak softly and clearly, listen carefully, and maintain a sense of humor whenever possible
  • Respect boundaries that may differ from our own
  • Respect confidentiality
  •  Refrain from harmful gossip about others, and speak honestly

Each person, regardless of their role at FUSF—including clergy, staff, Board members, and our non-member friends—is expected to live to this covenant within the context of their relationship with the First Universalist Society in Franklin community.
