Director of Religious Education
The Director of Religious Education (DRE) oversees and facilitates a multi-aged, comprehensive program of religious education for the First Universalist Society in Franklin. The DRE works to create a safe and inclusive environment for all families; designs and administers classes and activities (using both our indoor and outdoor learning spaces) which foster the development of a UU faith identity; promotes the values of UU religious education with a goal toward enriching the spiritual lives of children, youth and families, and fostering multigenerational inclusivity at FUSF. This is a full-year position with an average of 20 hours per week during the church year and reduced hours in the summer. The position has a competitive salary and generous benefits.
Major Responsibilities/Activities
- Be present at the Meetinghouse Sundays in accordance to that week’s programming, typically from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm
- Plan, coordinate, and provide Sunday services programming (all youth), “Our Whole Lives (OWL) sexuality education classes (grades 4-6 and 7-9), and a Coming of Age program for teens
- Give the “Time for All Ages” address to the whole congregation during Sunday morning services in consultation and arrangement with the Minister
- Recruit, train, and oversee volunteers/staff to (1) teach children’s and youth’s classes and (2) staff the nursery
- Attend meetings of the Religious Education Committee and foster the leadership development of committee members
- Provide administrative reports and budget information as requested
- Ensure program adherence with FUSF and state/federal regulations (ie CORI for volunteers)
Additional Responsibilities/Activities
- Provide Adult Education in collaboration and coordination with the Minister and RE Committee
- Participate in the development of occasional special and intergenerational events or services and coordinate them with the FUSF calendar and the RE Committee
- Develop outreach strategies to make our programs visible in the larger community in coordination with the Communications Team
- Actively work with the Minister & Congregation to increase and maintain the number of families involved in RE
Qualifications/Knowledge/Experience
Required Qualifications
- Successful completion of CORI/Background check
- Understand the principles and purposes of Unitarian Universalism
- Fluent in English with good communication skills
- Bachelor’s Degree in related field or equivalent life experience
- Experience with Google Suite and social media (ie Facebook)
Desirable Qualifications
- Unitarian Universalist affiliation. BA or Masters in an education-related field
- Education leadership and management experience
- Experience in teaching, administration, supervision of staff and volunteers
- Credentialing as a religious education professional under the UUA, or a ministerial candidate or in fellowship as a Unitarian Universalist minister
- Process and strategy development, along with project management skills
