Meet Christina Barrett

Christina and her family-husband Shawn and daughters Cayla, 12, and Kendra, 10, moved to Norfolk from Clarence Center, in upstate New York in February 2016. While they feel as though they are still settling in, Christina is so thrilled to have found a community the family can call its own at FUSF!

Christina grew up in Indianapolis. She and Shawn, who grew up in Toronto, Canada, met in 2000 while they were working at the same company-Eli Lilly. Christina was an interior design contractor, outfitting the building with new spaces and office furniture, and Shawn was a chemical engineer. After mutual friends introduced them, Shawn and Christina hit it off and they married a few years later. They moved to Pennsylvania for a couple of years where Cayla and Kendra were born, then they were off to upstate New York.

While in Clarence Center, which is near Niagara Falls and a half hour outside of Buffalo, Christina became a certified Montessori educator, and helped to set up a Montessori school called The Curious Minds. She did it all-building furniture, painting walls, painting the playground, planning the space, organizing, as well as teaching! Christina is currently a substitute teacher at the Woodside Montessori Academy in Millis, and hopes to sub at the Sunrise Montessori School in Franklin soon.

In Canada, Shawn worked at Molson Brewing Company while in college. After college, he got a job in Alameda, California at Avigen. Shawn was once a home-brewer, and interestingly, his brewing hobby has many similar aspects with his vocation-biochemical reactions, bio-reactors, etc. Shawn now commutes to Framingham, where he is a bioprocess engineer for the Genzyme Corporation.

Christina loves the beach, and is thankful to live so close to it now. The family enjoys being outside and exploring-trips to area beaches top among their destinations. They love bird- and animal-watching, nature walks, and anything outside. But they also enjoy video gaming and technology as well. They are voracious readers and enjoy comic books and Superheroes. They are especially excited to attend ComicCon in Boston in the Fall. Christina is a whiz with the sewing machine and has used her boundless creativity to make some pretty awesome costumes for the girls! Ask to see her photos!

How did they come to discover Unitarian Universalism? By taking an on-line quiz! That’s a story that will sound very familiar to many of us at FUSF! How did they find FUSF? By doing a Google search! FUSF was the closest UU church and on a Sunday in early October, Christina found herself in our company. Shawn, Cayla, and Kendra were soon in tow! Christina officially became a member in January. What does Christina like best about FUSF? “I love the Social Justice group. And the music! I was hooked when the choir sang “Storm Comin’.” Oh, and the awesome variety of things that are always happening at FUSF. So much to choose from!”

Please welcome Christina, Shawn, Cayla, and Kendra Barrett!
